Audi E-Tron GT buyers will get three years of free DC fast charging
You don't have to buy a Porsche Taycan to get years of free charging. Audi revealed that E-Tron GT buyers in 2022 will receive three years of free DC fast charging (through Volkswagen’s Electrify America, of course), just like their counterparts with Taycan. If you can find a suitable charging station, you can charge your electric sports car from 5% to 80% for free in 22 minutes. In other words, you may not pay anything for interstate travel or long journeys.
This could be important when the E-Tron GT's estimated range tops out at 238 miles. You might be more likely to buy the EV if the price of an extended journey is a non-issue There's also a clear competitive motivation — Tesla has occasionally revived free Supercharging as an incentive to buy its cars, and Audi might lose business if it insists on paid battery top-ups.
As before, the challenge is coverage. Electrify America expects to have 800 charging stations in the United States by the end of 2021, but as of March 2020, Tesla has more than 908 super charging stations in the country. If there are not enough charging stations on your planned route, free charging may not matter. Audi’s freebies may only reach their full potential when the coverage is truly ubiquitous.
