What are green tires?

Today and around the world, our environment continues to deteriorate. New solutions are constantly being developed to overcome this problem and slow down the degradation of our environment. The introduction of new technologies at the cutting edge of innovation have made it possible to create a new type of tire, called "green" tires, which are neither summer nor winter tires. These ecological tires are a real revolution that allows a reduced impact on the environment. These tires reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption.

The manufacturers have replaced the chemicals, such as carbon, present in the composition of these tires, with a new one. generation of silica. Thus, they are constantly looking for new solutions to obtain a tire with even lower rolling resistance and a shorter braking distance, while optimizing their longevity, handling and performance. Green tires are durable and less polluting tires, but they are not suitable for all cars or all seasons (for more information, see article "How to choose the right tires for my car").

Why equip yourself with ecological tires?

From a strictly ecological point of view, the production in itself of these more responsible tires offers significant advantages. First of all, the processes used during production require less carbon and above all an absence of chemicals such as highly polluting aromatic oils which are harmful to health and the environment.

In addition to offer benefits for manufacturers, this type of tire also offers advantages for consumers paying attention to ecology and the environment:

Improved ecological production: 10% less raw materials Lower noise emissions : tread which causes less vibrations coming into contact with the roadway Reduced fuel consumption: up to 10% of fuel consumption saved; Reduced CO2 emissions: a reduction of 4 to 8g of CO2 / km Improved lifespan: compared compared to traditional tires, the difference can amount to thousands of kilometers

Is this type of tire economical?

Rolling resistance is reduced by 20% for vehicles using green tires versus those fitted with conventional tires. This represents a fuel saving of 0.2 to 0.4 L per 100 km.

On average, a person driving 20,000 km per year saves about ten euros on the fuel. If we add to this that their purchase price is about 8% more expensive than for standard tires, this is not a significant saving for the consumer when it comes to changing them.

Indeed, the economic benefits appear relatively low. This is why we must keep in mind that bad environmental impacts are only reliable on a large scale.

Opt for eco-driving! To be truly economical, green tires must be added to a general eco-driving approach on the part of the driver. This means completely changing your driving habits in order to be much more flexible in the way you drive, but also in the use of comfort equipment (such as air conditioning, for example). Finally, motorists can also fall back on “cleaner” vehicles to reduce their consumption.

European tire labeling

As with household appliances, tires benefit from 'an energy classification imposed on all member states of the European Union, called European labeling. It was put in place to help consumers choose when replacing their tires. This system is also used for ecological tires.

Thanks to a classification going from A to G, which assesses the energy gain, road grip, braking and sound volume, we achieve distribute the different tire models.

Since the majority of green tires reduce fuel consumption, they are labeled A or B for rolling resistance. They also promise better longevity than conventional tires and excellent wet grip (A or B in most cases).
