Since 2012, the U.S. built Volkswagen Passat is known for its exceptional value, and the refreshed 2016 model just sweetens the deal even more.

Before we get to the good news, lets talk about the bad first. For 2016, Volkswagen has dropped the five-speed manual transmission from the Passat lineup due to underwhelming consumer take rate. As you already know, the 2.0 L TDI Passat models are on temporary hold until Volkswagen finds a solution for their excessive exhaust emissions and resubmits its approval paper to the EPA.

Now, the good news:

All 2016 Passat models, except the top-of-the-range V6 SEL Premium, is powered by the silky, smooth, 1.8 L turbocharged, inline-four gasoline engine. It produces 170 horsepower and 184 lb. ft. torque. The engine is backed by a traditional six-speed, torque converter automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The top-dog Passat V6 SEL Premium is powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.6 L VR6 which produces 280 horsepower and 258 lb. ft. torque.

The V6 is backed by a lightening-quick six-speed, dual-clutch transmission.

The base 2016 Volkswagen Passat

S,

with the six-speed automatic gearbox starts at $22,440 and includes a dual-zone air-conditioning system, Bluetooth, CD player, touchscreen infotainment system, backup camera, and 16-in alloy wheels.

The new for 2016 Passat R-Line starts at $23,975 and features an exclusive body kit and 19-in alloy wheels, wrapped with 235/40 all-season tires. The Passat R-Line can also be optioned with heated and powered front leatherette seats for an additional $795.

The mid-level Volkswagen Passat SE starts at $26,280 and includes 17-in alloy wheels, sunroof, heated and powered front leatherette seats, upgraded infotainment system, adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning, and emergency braking.

An optional technology package ($2,130) adds navigation, keyless entry and go, heated rear seats, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Now, the total price for the Passat SE is $28,410.

The Passat SEL starts at $30,495 and adds 18-in alloy wheels, Fender premium audio, and real leather seats on top of all the features available in the SE trim.

For an additional $4,000, the Passat SEL Premium adds a host of assistance features like automatic park assist, lane-keeping assist, and LED headlights and taillights (which are optional on the lower trim levels). The top-of-the-range, 2016 Volkswagen Passat V6 SEL Premium, with DSG transmission, tops out at $36,835. That may seem like a lot of money for a semi-premium, mid-size sedan, but it is completely loaded.

If you are in the market for a well built, spacious, and powerful mid-size sedan, then you should definitely checkout the 2016 Volkswagen Passat lineup. With great deals and an additional $2,000 off for current VW owners, the 2016 Passat is an exceptional value.
