The company's exotic car collection requires us to recall Father's Day driving memories

You and I will not be shocked by the large number of articles published on Automoblog.net and other websites, because I have two parents who support my love for cars. As Father’s Day approached, I recalled how my father played a role in bringing my interest in cars to a critical level. Cars have become the dominant force in my life. I suspect that I, like many people, can connect their father to great cars.

Maybe you remember your dad identifying themselves with their first car. Maybe it was something modest like a Honda Civic or maybe something grander like a Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am, Toyota Celica or maybe even a four-wheel drive Jeep. Maybe there is a car your father bought recently in order to realize a dream. After all, shouldn’t every driver have a chance of taking the wheel of his or her fantasies? In all honesty, my young life had not involved a slew of noteworthy vehicles. Most of my life was spent around mass-produced General Motors brand sedans. I remembered one time seeing a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray at the drive-thru of a McDonald’s. For me, developing a physical presence around exotic and classic cars didn’t occur until the 1990s. I’m fortunate to my father taking time to share some of his car-related memories.

Like so many fathers, mine places quite a bit of mileage on his vehicles collecting a fair share of positive and negative motoring memories as the odometer ticked upwards. My dad always speaks fondly of a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 they owned around the time I was born. The second-generation iteration of Chevrolet’s answer to the Ford Mustang, the 1970 to 1981 examples of the Chevrolet Camaro are perhaps better appreciated than Ford’s pony car during much of that time period. His particular 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was decked-out in a Dark Brown paint scheme with Gold striping. While the 2014 Camaro is presented in 10 color shades (including three variations on Red), shades of Brown have probably been omitted from the factory paint palette since the 1980s. However, from what I saw of the pictures of my parent’s Camaro Z/28, the color definitely looked sharp.

Due to a growing family and other factors, my dad’s time with his Dark Brown Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was short. However, I believe that vehicle provided some of his most pleasant driving experiences. Today, I cannot help but to feel guilty that I was the reason my dad needed to eventually forego the fun-filled treasures of cars like the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. Following one Christmas in the 1990s, my dad was granted with a chance to reconnect to this famed vehicle by constructing a snap-together model kit I received of a 1981 Camaro Z/28. Since the car was one of the first plastic model kits I received, the thought has crossed my mind the vehicle choice was done deliberately.

Today, whenever I see an old or new Chevrolet Camaro, I feel a particular sense of joy and the need to snap a small collection of pictures with my digital camera. Covering the auto shows, I have witnessed the return of the Camaro right up to the resurrection of the Z/28 badge. With digital recording means making it so easy to capture memories, the unfortunate thing was my parents took few pictures where their 1979 Camaro Z/28 was the subject likely due to the fact camera film was easily exhaustible. It is because of this experience with the Chevrolet Camaro I would love a chance to rent one for a weekend.
